Tell State Senators to Stop Pumping MILLION$ into Corporate Charters!

The Republican Senate Majority is poised to pass a one-house budget resolution that would bring harmful Betsy DeVos-type proposals right here to New York. They plan to send hundreds of millions of new taxpayer dollars to corporate charter coffers and to eliminate the state's charter school cap.

The Senate Republican proposal increases tuition payments to the corporate charter school industry – this takes money directly out of public school districts and puts it into the pockets of charters. For a district like Mount Vernon that already fights for every dollar its schools need, it'd mean an additional $1.48 million that the public schools would have to send to surrounding charter schools. All this comes on the top of the $1.9 BILLION in taxpayer dollars being send to charter school operators this year.

Their plan would eliminate the cap on charters, further allowing charters to expand un-checked and without oversight. The charter school industry is not held to the same standards as traditional public schools. The Senate Republican majority is pushing this plan without including a SINGLE proposal to increase transparency or accountability for charters.

Their bill also proposes giving corporate charters access to statewide building aid and additional money for payrolls that would entitle them to double-dip state funding and receive MORE funding than our public schools do! On top of that charters use for-profit firms to manage day-to-day operations, firms that profit off of our kids and are unaccountable to state or local officials.

Charters pick and choose which students they enroll – they underserve the neediest students, enrolling a disproportionately smaller number of students living in temporary housing, English language learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities.

Despite all of this, Senate Republicans are pushing to send more and more taxpayer dollars to corporate charters. Don't let them bring Betsy DeVosTATION to New York. Please fax now and help us stop this attack on public education!
