One of the most important union benefits that you have is your health insurance.
The Board of Education assumes either 85%, 80% or 75% of the cost of this benefit as stated in Article 36, Section B of the agreement between the Board of Education and the Half Hollow Hills Teachers’ Association.
Effective July 1, 2006, for unit members whose base salary is less than $60,000, the Board of Education shall assume 85% of the cost of the Empire Plan Plus Enhancements. The same dollar amount shall be applied to the other two plans (HMO & HIP). Effective July 1, 2006, for unit members whose base salary is at least $60,000 but less than $100,000, the Board of Education shall assume 80% of the cost of the Empire Plan Plus Enhancements. The same dollar amount shall be applied to the other two plans (HMO & HIP). Effective July 1, 2006, for unit members whose base salary is $100,000 or more, the Board of Education shall assume 75% of the cost of the Empire Plan Plus Enhancements. The same dollar amount shall be applied to the other two plans (HMO & HIP). Unit members shall take into retirement the same contribution rate they had in their final year of active employment, except that for those unit members who retire by June 30, 2008, the maximum contribution rate shall be 20%.
Waiver of Insurance:
A unit member, who has been a participant in one of the District’s health insurance plans for a minimum of one year, may submit a waiver of coverage and shall be eligible to be paid on a yearly basis in accordance with the following schedule:
$2,000 for waiver of family coverage
$1,200 for waiver of individual coverage
$1,000 to reduce coverage from family to individual, provided that the unit member is carrying family coverage, and provided further that family coverage is not picked up by a spouse employed by the District.
Unfortunately, you cannot receive a yearly payment unless you had health coverage as of November 1, 2005 and apply for a waiver as of October 31, 2006.

We believe all our members should take advantage of the health insurance benefit or health insurance waiver. However, if you presently choose not to take the health insurance benefit and do not qualify for the yearly waiver, you should enroll in a health plan before November 1, 2006. This would make you eligible for the yearly waiver payment beginning after September 1, 2007.
