According to Webster’s New World Dictionary teamwork is defined as the “acting together to make the work successful and effective”. The most effective teamwork is produced when all involved harmonize their contributions and work toward a common goal.
Teamwork is working together, sharing common goals and being respectful to each other. Teachers and paraprofessionals are both there for the children. Most paraprofessionals want to be there to help both the children as well as assist the teacher.
Many staff members do not know the role of paraprofessionals. In order to create a team we must know what each person brings to the team. If you do not know, do not be afraid to ask questions. If one does not know the role of a paraprofessional it would be hard to work together and create teamwork. There is the misconception that paraprofessionals are there to clean up, to be a copy person, and to watch the class while the teacher is away, instead of being part of the educational team. Paraprofessionals are there to assist the teachers.
Paraprofessionals spend time with students and can share information on student playground & lunchroom behavior or pass incidents. Often students will tell paraprofessionals things they would not tell their teacher.
Paraprofessionals are just one of many “players” on the school staff team. Get to know the other players in your school so you can begin to work together and create an environment where there is teamwork, respect and appreciation for the team.

Professional Development Course Offerings
Last year surveys were sent to all of the paraprofessionals requesting suggests for topics for professional development courses. Based on the responses the course offering selections for 2005/2006 was developed.
NYSUT has reviewed our Professional Development Course Offering Booklet and has decided to use it as a model for other school districts when developing their own.
Please take the opportunity to thank Silvia Scognamillo and her staff for their hard work setting up the courses and developing the Professional Development Course Offerings booklet.

Professional Development Training Requirements
Please be advised that all paraprofessionals are required by contract to complete 10 hours of professional development courses each year:
